The Glade is a horror story in the mould of Stephen King, and rendered the more so by its faint echoes of Pet Cemetery and the even stronger resonance of the pervasive malignancy of It.”—Review by Brian O’HareThis gripping, edge-of-your-seat mystery/thriller will have you thinking twice about booking that idyllic cottage in the country. my-thoughts-1I breathe a sigh of relief as I see the percentage on my Kindle reach 100% for at long last, I have finally finished reading this book. It’s honestly not the book’s problem, but rather a problem with myself. It all started the moment I saw that the book had over 6000 locations, almost twice the length of the books I’ve been reading these days on my Kindle, and so that made me feel that getting through the book was a chore, watching that percentage slowly rise.

Even though she had killed him with her own hands,
she couldn’t accept that he was dead.
They would never, not in a million years, believe her story.
No, they were more likely to admit her to the mental hospital than anything else.
Hell, she couldn’t even believe her tale herself.

For most of the book, we switch between two timelines: one from 3 years ago, before the Wenstrops settled down in The Glade, with interludes from the current one starting from Helen’s arrest. Gradually, the two begin to converge and continued on as a single timeline.

It was a magical scene, straight out of a fairy tale.
It wasn’t just the beautiful setting, it had a feeling entirely its own.
The deepest sense of peace and contentment overwhelmed Helen.

While on a short trip, Helen and Geoff Wenstrop came across a clearing in the Forest of Dean. Their initial impression of the place was that it was peaceful and idyllic and decided to settle down there, despite warnings from the locals. Little did they know about the dangers that came with the place. However, as we read on, we realise that nothing that happens in The Glade is coincidental. Helen and Geoff weren’t some random couple who just so happen to find The Glade and made a split second decision to live there, and this is probably my favourite part of the book. I just really dislike coincidences. Yeah sure they’re unavoidable, but sometimes they just seem like an easy way out of having to give a solid explanation.

The Glade got off to a pretty slow start, and there were quite a few parts that dragged but there were so many unanswered questions that I couldn’t just leave behind. The author has certainly done a great job at crafting the story such that readers are being kept hanging off the edge of the cliff till the very end by slowly releasing little tidbits of information to us, even with some half-truths to lead us away from the truth.

All in all, an intriguing read with vivid descriptions and lots of suspense but wished I was in the mood or had time to actually savour every word in it.
